In the sixties Jan was part of the Dutch Zero movement. Together with Jan Schoonhoven, Armando, Herman de Vries en Henk Peeters. All of their artworks were against painting. For them it was not about making masterpieces, it was about being minimalist. At the times Jan used coins and corks and made patterns with them.
plays a large role in Jan’s work. He collects items though he doesn't search for something specific. The items used in these artworks were found on small markets all over New York. When arranging these items in the crates Jan was not thinking about a composition. Jan says you are not supposed to see any composition in these works. But if you do that is fine too.
Jan is someone who does everything his own way. At the end of the fifties he left The Netherlands to study and work abroad. He lived in Cologne, on Curacao and he eventually settled down in New York. When Jan comes to Europe for work he lives and works in Antwerp.
Imagine this artwork in your house. Where would you place it or hang it?
