Competitive snacking

Maximum snacking! You probably eat a portion of fries or a few bitterballen. At most, you might finish a bag of chips on your own but eventually, most people feel full and stop. Not this competitive eater. Is it even still considered snacking when the portions are that massive? Over the years, a lot of research has been done on the physical effects of competitive eating. It turns out there are major differences between the bodies of regular people and competitive eaters. For most people, the brain sends a signal to the stomach when the stomach walls stretch, making you feel nauseous or even causing you to vomit. Competitive eaters train themselves not to experience this. There’s also a risk that a competitive eater’s stomach might not shrink back to its normal size.

Food fight!

Lots of tomatoes. La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Buñol in Spain. Thousands upon thousands of people make their way from all corners of the world to fight in this 'World's Biggest Food Fight' where more than one hundred metric tons of over-ripe tomatoes are thrown in the streets.

Food waste

About one third of all food produced for human consumption is wasted. That amounts to around 1.3 billion tons of food per year.

In Europe and North America, an average of 95 to 115 kilograms of food is wasted per person each year. In contrast, people in Sub-Saharan Africa and South and Southeast Asia waste only about 6 to 11 kilograms per year.

Every year, Western countries waste nearly as much food as is produced in the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa.
