This photograph is part of a series in which the artist, Johannes, captures the food given to the animals in a zoo in Moscow. The photos that are a part of this series are about mixed emotions. Hope, fear and care. These emotions are behind the idea of the zoo. The animals live in captivity, in a state between wild and domesticated. They are more domesticated than animals living in the wild, but they are wilder than your cat or dog.
This print was made using the riso printing technique. This means that the photo is printed in one color a few different times. The different colors are layered on top of each other to create the final colors of the image. If you get up close you can see all of the different colors.
Johannes is a German artist, who moved to Amsterdam to go the Gerrit Rietveld Academy. After he finished his studies there he became head of the photography department.
