There are a lot of shadows in this painting. Some of them look pretty large for the size of the objects that cast them. They also seem to go in different directions. It makes you wonder where the light that illuminates this table is situated.

When Michael painted this still life he set up a table in his studio and put all these items on it. Michael only started painting still lifes later in his career, he usually paints darker and more sexually explicit images.

Besides painting Michael does a lot of work internationally as an illustrator. His illustrations have been published in newspapers like The New York Times and The Guardian.
