Bouke de Vries

Still life with lemons

The dishes Bouke used…

are Dutch porridge bowls. They are from the city of Delft and are over 300 years old.

Like the seventeenth century

Bouke has made multiple still lifes throughout his career. This artwork was based on the Dutch traditions of still life making. Unlike the seventeenth century Dutch still lifes this work is three dimensional. Bouke tried to make it look like it could be from that time with the materials he used.

When life gives you lemons

The objects in the bowls are actual lemons. Lemons were painted a lot in seventeenth century still lifes. They signify the passage of time, in this work that is made extra clear because of the way the lemons look. They are all dried up.

London calling

Bouke is a Dutch artist who studied at the Design Academy in Eindhoven. After Eindhoven he moved to London to study at Central Martin’s. He still lifes and works there.
