These apples are a part of a large series of pictures Thomas took of apples. With the series he explored psychophysics. Which is a scientific branch of psychology that focuses on the way humans react to smell, color and sound. Psychophysicists research this in order find out more about the way our senses work. The apples are a tool that Thomas uses to explain research being done in the realm psychophysics. He critiques the practices used in by showing what is done to patients by maiming the apples. Thomas has written notes next to the apples to mimic researchers who take notes of their experiments.

The apple has lots of different symbolic meaning. Love, marriage, spring and youths. It symbolizes both fertility and immortality.
