Junk becomes art

For this installation Niels selected thirteen greetings from his spam filter. The selection he made was sawn from multiplex, painted by hand and fastened to the ceiling. The greetings are slowly turning here, in the entrance of the LAM, welcoming you and our other visitors. By sawing and painting the wood by hand Niels makes something electronic into something artisan.

Dear…

Sometimes things go wrong wit spam. Like spelling errors or just an underscore where a word should be. Niels chooses to leave these mistakes in, because he thinks it adds to the work. In our installation there is an underscore where a word should be. Do you see it? What word would you fill in there?

Artist and blogger

Niels lives and works in Rotterdam. He is not only an artist but also a blogger for the Dutch website Trendbeheer.com, where he writes about contemporary visual art. The installation that you see here was made especially for the LAM. It is a part of a larger series of works by Niels called “On Spam, Comment Spam” in which he transforms the spam he receives into sculptures and installations.
