Frederique Jonker

Melkmachine

Italy

After graduating from high school Frederique went to the art academy in Florence for three months. Afterwards, she studied at the art academy in Utrecht. In her first year she has to try out different things. Like sculpting. ‘I find that quite difficult, that’s what I learned back then’, Frederique says. From 2016 till 2018 she had a studio at the ‘Rijksakademie’ for visual arts in Amsterdam. This is a two year education programme for international talents.

Making music

‘To me, painting is like making music. I just start and see what happens with all the materials on my canvas. I respond to that. With spray cans you can work really fast. I grab the spray cans and then: bam, bam, bam! That’s the way I improvise. Of course it’s a bit more serious than ‘bam, bam’. It’s a matter of research, trying out new things, see if it works, fail and try again.’

Dancing

‘I put on some music. Usually it’s weird, electronic music. Then I’ll get into a rhythm. The endresult becomes a harmony between colour, shape and composition.’

Milkmachine

Indirectly, this milkmachine relates to the LAM museum a lot. Our founders grandfather had a dairy farm in Amsterdam. His son Dirk distributes the milk with the use of the horse carrage at the age of fifteen. When the German occupiers forbid the distribution of milk in 1942, young Dirk opens up a milk shop at the Mercator square in Amsterdam. He brings is costumers like no other. He rewards the costumers with low prices. Or he gives them a little extra milk. His approach is succesfull and the business florishes. Because of this success Dirk starts to sell other products as well. Also, he started the firs self service grocery store in Amsterdam.
