Erin Jane Nelson

LyB (Lyanbito)

Inspiration

Erin Jane thinks of this artwork while she was traveling through the desert in New Mexico in the United States. The work is named after one of the little towns she cames across, Lyanbito.

Mixing materials

The quilts that Erin Jane makes are a mix of photography, sculpture and textile design. The images added to the quilt are like those you could also see on your computer screen. When you have multiple tabs open. Seeing it in textile form makes it a completely different experience.

Talking through textiles

In the nineteenth century European immigrants moved over to America and brought their knowledge of quilt techniques with them. Quilting became a very popular thing in America as a result. Girls start learning it from a young age. For special occasions like the birth of a child or a wedding these quilts were made. Women also used quilts to share their opinions. They did this by incorporating symbols into them. These opinions could be about anything, current events or social issues. With her work Erin Jane tries to do the same.
