Sam always started his day with a walk to the local marketplace. He immediately noticed the stalls with fish and shellfish. He never saw this many different kinds of fish in the Netherlands. He was especially drawn tot he lobsters and crabs. He found them so magnificent that he simply couldn’t resist drawing them.
The movement, rhythm and the colors of the lobsters were incredibly fascinating for Sam. He called them a riches for illustrators. Since then he paints shellfish regularly. Back in the Netherlands he also noticed the wonderful color and shine of clams.
Sam doesn’t just paint on a blank canvas. All of his paintings are made on objects that used to have a different function. They come from a past life he says. He used things like the fabric of old tents or sails. For this work he used a wooden plank that he took out of a carpenters trash bin.
