Kraut und Rüben

Apple syrup

Can you read what’s written on the cans? They are cans of ‘Apfelkraut’, a kind of apple syrup. The cans aren’t stacked properly. The apple syrup could pour out at any time and make a really sticky mess. Talking about chaos.

Rusty

Kira’s grandfather kept these empty cans of syrup to store his wire nails. They stood in his basement for years. When the house got cleaned up, Kira’s father collected these cans for her. He knows that Kira likes to use old and rusty objects. Preferably objects that relate to food, the kitchen or the housekeeping.

Breakfast

When Kira was young, she often slept over at her grandparents house on the weekends. For breakfast she loved the typical German bread, which is really thick and solid. It’s so thick that you can barely chew it. Then she covered the bread with a nice layer of butter and apple syrup. Fun fact; Kira’s grandparents used to buy this apple syrup in the Netherlands. Since it’s not really a popular product in Germany.

Coincidence?

Kira barely eats syrup on her bread anymore. The last time she bought a can of syrup, she needed it for one of her other works: Ancient Superfood. Which is also part of the LAM collection. For this artwork she used the syrup as a base for the piece of chewing gum that’s coming out of the machine. What a coincidence right?
