Ibi

Every year on the 28^th of December the Els Enfarinats festival takes place in the Spanish town Ibi. The festival is part of the festivities around the Day of the Innocent. A staged fight breaks out during the festival between a group of married men (Els Enfariants) and a group of other men (La Oposicio) who try to keep the peace. The battle is fought using flour and eggs while fireworks are set off in the background.

The Enfarinats are dressed in weird outfits and they start by occupying the city at eight o’clock in the morning. They gather at the church and they make a run for city hall. There they pick a mayor, a prosecutor and a judge. Their reign is cruel, their rules are ridiculous and the fines they give people are unlawful. They make fun of important people and hold comical speeches. At the end of the afternoon Les Enfarinats go around town to collect on all of the fines. Those who don’t pay go to jail and the money collected goes to charity.

Katrin is fascinated by everyday life in the public space. In the streets, the park, the city. Places where everyone goes and where people gather. Katrin loves people watching, especially how they respond to each other.

In Katrin's work you will often see social situations and people gathered in public places. However, she always photographs then from above. This gives us a new perceptive on these situations as we are never able to see them from above. Without seeing the faces of the people portrayed it makes her works look almost abstract.
