This work is called “Homework Cookie Tin”. It is in fact designed to be a cookie tin. The lid on the pot on top can be opened and you could put cookies in this. It would be hard to get them out though, because the lid is very heavy. The entire thing is made of polished bronze.
Where is the line when it comes to what is art and what is design? This cookie tin was made as a piece of design by Studio Job. You could definitely put cookies in it and use it for what it was made for. But in the LAM it is placed next to artworks, does that make it art? What do you think.
Studio Job is a design studio that was started Job Smeets in 1998 and is currently being led by Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel. The studio has craftsmen specialized in bronze casting and stain glass making working alongside people specialized in laser cutting and 3D printing. Job is the art director and Nynke is the graphic designer.
Ask your fellow visitors to close their eyes. Describe an artwork. They may now open their eyes and try to guess which one it was.
