Francis Offman

Untitled

I see, I seeā€¦
For artist Francis Offman, it is important not to waste materials. Used coffee grounds, discarded collages, found materials and paint are all brought together for each unique work. Have you discovered all the materials used in this work?
Without a solid base
Not a single collage by Francis Offman is framed. Each artwork is hammered into the wall with nails. So despite the size of the work, it remains airy and fragile
Croissant
Even though the work is abstract, with a little imagination you can see some shapes and objects in it. For example, we found a figure of a croissant. Do you recognize more shapes?
Objects with a story
Every ingredient or material that Francis uses for his works has a story for him. He lives in Bologna, where there is a lot of special plasterwork. The coffee grounds he used come from his friends' percolators. The paper is 'saved' from bread packaging or shoe boxes. In this way, Francis Offman builds a story on the canvas, which is very personal to him.
Coffee
Coffee is special to Francis Offman. It acts as a bridge between his native country of Rwanda and his home country of Italy. Rwanda is a major coffee producer and Italy is known for its very strong coffee drinking culture. The artworks explore the relationships between producer and consumer, and even colonialism and hidden power structures between nations.
The artist
Francis Offman (b. 1987, Rwanda) is an artist living in Bologna. His work is rapidly spreading around the world and has already conquered the hearts in Italy. In 2024 he had a major solo exhibition in the heart of London, at Warwick Arts Centre.
