The outer layer of this artwork is velvety. Like the powdery topping of a chocolate truffle. Truffles are "coated" with pure cocoa powder. It’s mouth-watering. But this “piece of chocolate” is made of Corten steel. Imagine taking a bite of this. That would be a totally different experience. The taste of iron instead of the sweet chocolate. Hard and cutting instead of buttery soft.
The Ritter’s Sport Schokolade is known for its square shape. Clara, the wife of Alfred Eugen Ritter, suggested creating a chocolate bar that would fit into every sport jacket pocket without breaking but weighed the same as a normal bar.
Thomas often chooses familiar objects that immediately bring back memories. But what happens when you’ll find something familiar in a totally other context, like here, in the museum? Can you give this piece of chocolate a new meaning?
