Do you see the bottles and cans in different colors? What do you think is in them? You can probably think of some things, like candy or coffee. But maybe other things as well.
Herman was born in The Hague. In The Hague on the Hoefkade Herman painted large murals on the sides of buildings. A few years ago the murals were touched up by Herman’s two children: Teun and Françoise. Herman had passed away some time before the touch ups were done. His ashes were mixed in with the paint. You can see the mural that Herman’s ashes are in the image below. The bird above the girls hand was painted with the ashes.
Herman did everything. He was a teacher at art academy, he painted glass, decors and walls. He was also an etcher, graphic designer, woodworker, illustrator and he made mosaic.
Herman was always drawing in his sketchbooks. That’s how he started out. Drawing. At the Royal Academy for the Arts in The Hague. He studied there during the Second World War.
Herman liked to make art that everybody can understand. It just is what it looks like. No deeper layer, straight forward.
Select an artwork that you have walked passed without giving it much thought. Look at it closely and do some research into it. Was
