Buiten alle schoonheid en humor in dit kunstwerk, is er ook veel te horen. De componist en muzikant met wie Jennifer Levonian samenwerkt is Corey Marc Fogel. Samen hebben ze al meer dan 8 video’s vormgegeven. Het bijzondere aan deze video is: Corey is buiten de componist voor het eerst ook het hoofdpersonage. Ze ontmoetten elkaar in 2008 tijdens een residency programma bij het Atlantic Center for the Arts.

Jennifer Levonian heeft een bijzondere waardering voor de kracht van sociale regels, en vooral, hoe makkelijk je ze kunt breken. Iedere minimale actie kan gemakkelijk ongemakkelijkheid veroorzaken. Dat is in dit kunstwerk wel duidelijk. Wat was jouw meest ongemakkelijke moment vandaag?

Deze video gaat over een man die een existentiële crisis krijgt in een chique supermarkt, terwijl een blote vrouw yoga beoefend tussen de herfst pompoenen. Gekker kan het niet worden toch? Wanneer je zenuwachtig wordt zoals het hoofdpersonage, hoor, zie en voel je vaak veel meer. Alles komt hard binnen en kost langer de tijd om te verwerken. Dat gevoel legt Levonian vast in deze video.

Deze animatie is gemaakt met papier en waterverf. Door sommige delen uit te knippen, kon Jennifer het laten lijken alsof ze bewegen. Probeer het maar eens na thuis!

Een vriend van Jennifer vertelde haar over een sociologie vak dat hij volgde. De professor daagde alle studenten uit om in een publieke ruimte, zoals een supermarkt (of museum), opeens stil te gaan staan. Let maar eens op, hoe snel dat ongemakkelijk wordt. Een animatiefilm waarbij het hoofdpersonage volledig stilstaat, dat werd snel saai, dacht Jennifer. Dus ze bedacht allerlei situaties die hetzelfde ongemakkelijke, ‘net-niet normaal’, gevoel konden oproepen in de supermarkt. Zoals... je hoofd onder de groente-bevochtigers houden of spelen met een kaas display. Heb je de Pitbull Yogurt al ontdekt?

Jennifer Levonian (1977, West-Virginia, Verenigde Staten) woont en werkt in Vigo, Spanje. Ze is vooral bekend in de Verenigde Staten, en begint langzaam ook de Europese harten te veroveren. Ze behaalde haar bachelor aan de College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, en haar master aan de Rhode Island School of Design.

This video is about a man who has an existential crisis in a fancy supermarket, while a naked woman practices yoga among the autumn pumpkins. It can't get any crazier, right? When you get anxious like the main character, you often hear, see and feel a lot more. Everything hits hard and takes longer to process. Levonian captures that feeling in this video.

This animation was made with paper and watercolor. By cutting out some parts, Jennifer was able to make it look like they were moving. Try it at home!

A friend of Jennifer's told her about a sociology course he was taking. The professor challenged all the students to suddenly stand still in a public space, such as a supermarket (or museum). Just watch how quickly that small gesture becomes uncomfortable. An animated film in which the main character stands completely still, that would quickly become boring, Jennifer thought. So she came up with all kinds of situations that could evoke the same uncomfortable, 'not-quite-normal' feeling in the supermarket.
