Break – fast. The word refers to breaking the fasting period of the prior night. This is a traditional English breakfast. The breakfast table used to be an opportunity for rich people to display the wealth of their estates in the quality of the meats, vegetables and ingredients produced on the surrounding lands. Just like the Keukenhof estate, the gardens of the Castle here. Keuken means kitchen, the Keukenhof estate was the area where they collected the herbs, berries and the meat for the kitchen.
The photos of Martin Parr might look exaggerated or even grotesque. He chooses unusual subjects, like a breakfast. As a photographer Martin wants ‘to show us in a penetrating way how we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value.’ Any idea what you would be photographing if you were Martin?
