Marloes often built forts for herself as a child. So she would have a space just for herself. Without adults en with her own rules. She calls these ‘safe spaces’. An environment where you don’t have to act normal. What is normal anyways? In her work she questions the norm.
Sparkle, lots of colour, fabrics and objects of her childhood. That’s typical for Marloes. Her works always have a playful and happy feel to them. She looks at things from the bright side of life. Not to avoid reality, but to look at it from a positive perspective.
This artwork is one of the few in the museum that you are allowed to touch. In fact, you are suppose to touch them. Do you know that assignment some people had in school? For which you had to take care of a raw egg for a couple days. You have to be really carefull for it not to break. This assignment is supposed to improve your sense of responsibility. These Babybells need to be handled with the same precaution. It’s like holding a baby.
Does this work remind you of something? Babybells maybe? Those small, round pieces of cheese in a red packaging. Maybe you’ve had them in your lunchbox before.
Although, these Babies are a lot more difficult to carry around. You should give it a try…
Neat or messy?
